Bailouts Galore!

You've no doubt heard about the recent rash of bailouts. The financial industry, mortgage industry, and now the Big 3 automobile companies are asking for handouts.

In John Stossel's most recent column, he writes, '"We can't just let financial companies fail!' I say, 'Why not?' The way the system is supposed to work [is this]: People fail. And then the competent people take over the assets from the failed people, and then you start again with a new stronger base. What we're doing this time is ... taking the assets from the competent people, giving them to the incompetent people, and saying, 'OK, now you can compete with the competent people.' So everybody's weakened: The whole nation is weakened, the whole economy is weakened. That's not the way it's supposed to work.'"

Amen to that!

Now let me couch my own semi-libertarian politics with this comment: If I'm a worker for the Big Three, I might not have the same attitude. Our conservative and liberal political values, I believe, only go so far when it affects our family, our life, our comfort zone.

The other side of the coin is this: The Big 3 aren't going to die, or at least quietly, even if they run out of cash. Someone will swoop in and make it profitable again because there are loads of brand value. Americans know the name: Ford, Chrysler, GM.

If you're starting a home business, or any business for that matter, there's value in your name that you have to work to build. When you're building your writing business, included. The key is to pull out all the stops to make sure you're building up your reputation and your name.
